Industry Summit on the Commercial Adoption of Open Source Software - October 12 - Palo Alto, CA
An emerging enterprise IT industry summit
Presented by The 451 Group
Wednesday, October 12, 2005, 8:30-11:00 a.m. PT
Crowne Plaza Hotel Palo Alto - 4290 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, CA
Event Focus
The 451 Group is hosting a senior executive-level industry summit to discuss the impact of open source software in the enterprise IT arena and to identify how to build a successful business model around open source. The use of open source software is fundamentally changing the way that vendors, end users and investors do business and make money. Like all powerful tools, open source can do damage if used improperly; however, the potential benefits also are massive, and that's why it's important to understand where there is upside potential in the commercial adoption of open source.
This exclusive, invitation-only summit is based around the upcoming release of The 451 Group’s latest 451 Special Report on this subject, which will provide 100+ pages of analysis of the market opportunity for companies that are building, investing in or otherwise using open source.
After examining the pros and cons of various licensing models, this report will look at the decisions that enterprises and vendors need to make when deciding whether or not to incorporate an open source approach into their businesses. It will also discuss how investors should view the use of open source in potential investment targets and how open source affects the value of and risk associated with investments made in this area.
The summit on October 12 will bring together key industry leaders from major vendor companies, venture capitalists and early adopter end users to discuss opportunities within the context of The 451 Group's findings.
Format
The program is divided into three parts. First, Rachel Chalmers, Senior Analyst for Enterprise Software at The 451 Group, will present findings from the latest 451 Special Report on the commercial adoption of open source software. Then she will participate, along with industry leaders, in a panel discussion moderated by Martin Schneider, also Senior Analyst for Enterprise Software with The 451 Group, on this space and its future. Finally, there will be an opportunity for executive-level discussion among the audience and the panelists on the future of this market space, with the 451 moderator fielding questions from summit participants and moderating responses from Rachel and other panel members.
